Een kind is in de Underground gevallen, en het is nu aan de speler om hem te besturen en te helpen de oppervlakte te bereiken. Tijdens de reis van de speler door de Underground ontmoet hij verschillende monsters, waarvan hij sommigen moet bevechten, terwijl anderen hem niet erg zullen. Tijdens de gevechten krijgt de speler altijd de optie om de monsters te doden of te pacificeren, en zijn keuzes zullen de rest van het spel be\u00efnvloeden. Ze uit haar wens om het kind te beschermen tegen de heerser van de Underground, Asgore Dreemurr. Om naar het oppervlak terug te keren, moet het kind nu Asgores kasteel vinden, aangezien het portaal dat de twee werelden verbindt daar is. Onderweg ontmoet het kind tal van monsters, waaronder Undyne, Alphys en de skeletten Papyrus en Sans. Zijn vader Asgore verklaarde vervolgens de oorlog, en probeert <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Undertale\" target=\"_blank\">de oorlog<\/a> te verzamelen, waarvan hij er al zes heeft, om de poort tussen de twee werelden te vernietigen.<\/p>\n<p>Het spel heeft drie mogelijke eindes, afhankelijk van hoeveel monsters de speler tijdens het spelen heeft gedood.<\/p>\n<p>Het spel werd gefinancierd via de crowdfundingwebsite Kickstarter en het duurde 32 maanden om het te ontwikkelen. Toby Fox wilde $5.000 ophalen, maar verzamelde uiteindelijk $51.000 van ongeveer 2.400 mensen. Ze datet al meer dan vijf jaar Patrick Gu, bekend op internet als Pato. Hij is een digitaal kunstenaar gevestigd in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, maar de twee lijken geen probleem te hebben met hun langeafstandsrelatie.
