Melissa Margaret Peterman was born on 1 July 1971, in Edina, Minnesota, US, the daughter of Allan Peterman and Pamela Diane, and of German, Swedish and Scottish ancestry, Melissa grew up in Burnsville, Minnesota, where she attended Burnsville High School, and after matriculation, enrolled at Minnesota State University, Mankato, graduating with a BA and a major in theater.
