Who is Pat Barry?

American former kickboxer and mixed martial artist Patrick Joseph ‘Pat’ Barry was born in New Orleans, Louisiana USA, on 7 July 1979, so Cancer’s his zodiac sign. He competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight division, and was mostly known for his low kicks.

Education and early life

Pat was raised in Bogota, Colombia alongside his younger brother and older sister, by their African-American mother who was a housewife, and American father who was a military veteran; Pat’s father died from cancer when Pat was six years old, and the family then moved back to New Orleans.

Pat grew up being a huge fan of ninjas, and enjoyed watching movies starring Belgian actor and martial artist Jean-Claude Camille Francois Van Varenberg, as well as playing video games such as the “Street Fighter”; he also occasionally watched K-1 boxing. He studied at a local high school, and was interested in a number of physical activities during his time there, including wrestling, playing football and running track.

Pat matriculated in 1997, and then began working as a pizza delivery man; he was 21 when he began training in martial arts.

Career as a mixed martial artist

It was in 2001 that he began training in kickboxing, sanshou and Wushu at Russell Jones’ Kickboxing Gym, while simultaneously attending the University of New Orleans.

Pat’s first bout was on 2 November 2002, when he defeated Robert Parham at the US Open International Martial Arts Championships; Pat quit the above mentioned gym following the win, and was then trained by Shaolin kung fu master Shawn Liu at LIU International.

He competed in two categories at the 2003 Art of War: China Comes to Atlanta, and was then made a member of the US National Sanshou team; he won a silver medal at the 2003 World Wushu Championships, and gold at the 2004 K. Superstar Championships.

Pat joined the professional kickboxing promotion K-1 in 2005 and had his first bout on 30 April 2005, when he lost via split decision to Scott Lighty, the first defeat of his career. Two months later, Pat befriended American former kickboxer Jeffrey Ryan ‘Duke’ Roufus and began working out at his gym. On 13 August 2005, Pat faced and defeated Mark Selbee at the K-1 World Grand Prix in Las Vegas II. On 19 November 2005, his and Russian heavyweight kickboxer Aleksandr Pitchkounov’s bout ended in a draw at the K-1 World Grand Prix in Tokyo Final, but Aleksandr defeated him when they faced each other again on 29 April 2006.

Pat was then trained by Ernesto Hoost in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and faced Scott Lighty again on 8 December 2006 at Shin Do Kumate XI, this time defeating him. He entered the 2007 K-1 World Grand Prix in Hawaii and defeated Gary Goodridge in the quarter-finals, but then again lost to Aleksandr Pitchkounov in the semi-finals.

He then entered the 2007 K-1 World Grand Prix in Las Vegas, defeating Rickard Nordstrand in the quarter-finals but losing to Zabit Samedov in the semi-finals; Pat’s final K-1 bout was losing to Freddy Kemayo at the 2007 K-1 Fighting Network Prague.

He joined World Combat League in 2008, fighting seven matches from May through August 2008, and then focused on mixed martial arts, with his debut being a win against Mike Delaney at Combat USA: Battle in the Bay 7 in 2008.

Pat’s debut UFC match was against Dan Evensen on 27 December 2008, when he defeated the Norwegian in the first round, while he lost his second match against newcomer Tim Hague on 23 May 2009. Pat next faced Antoni Hardonk on 24 October 2009, knocking him out in the second round, but then lost to Mirko Cro Cop on 12 June 2010, in which Pat broke his foot and hand during the fight.

He faced Joey Beltran on 22 January 2011 in a winning effort, and then lost to Cheick Kongo on 26 June, as well as to Stefan Struve on 1 October. Pat went on to win by knockout against Christian Morecraft on 20 January 2012, but lost via knockout in the first round to Lavar Johnson on 5 May 2012.

Pat won by knockout in the second round against Shane del Rosario on 15 December 2012, and was then knocked out in the first round by Shawn Jordan on 15 June 2013; his final UFC match was on 7 December 2013, when he lost to Soa Palelei.

Pat revealed on Twitter on 28 January 2014 that he was retiring from MMA, and thus returned to kickboxing. He faced and defeated Ed Burris on 22 March 2014, lost to Zack Mwekassa on 3 Ma.then won via unanimous decision against Demoreo Dennis on 16 January 2015, after which he also retired from kickboxing.

Pat’s today working as a coach, but prefers to stay away from the media’s attention.

Love life and wife

Pat rarely speaks about his love life in interviews, but it’s known that he’s today engaged. He and American mixed martial artist Rose Gertrude Namajunas haven’t spoken about when and how they met, but it’s believed that they were introduced by a mutual friend at a gym in 2011, and became engaged in 2014; Rose’s a former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion, and she often trains with Pat.

Pat hasn’t spoken of other women whom he’s been with, he’s engaged to Rosa Namajunas as of February 2023, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.

Interesting facts and hobbies

Pat befriended Mirko Cro Cop after having lost to him, and they then often worked out together at Mirko’s training center in Zagreb, Croatia.

Pat reveled in August 2017 that he had been addicted to cocaine, vodka and painkillers, but was sober for a year.

He loves to play video games – his favorites are “Mortal Kombat” and “Tekken”.
