Who is George Newbern?
George Young Newbern was born in Little Rock, Arkansas USA, on 30 December 1964 – his zodiac sign is Capricorn and he holds American nationality. He is an actor, who is perhaps known best for his portrayal of Charlie in the thriller drama series “Scandal” created by Shonda Rhimes, and which starred Kerry Washington, Darby Stanchfield and Katie Lowes. It follows a woman who has founded her own crisis management company, and previously worked as a White House Communications Director. The series aired from 2012 to 2018 and won 35 awards, while it was nominated for 69 others including a Golden Globe.
Early life, family and education
George was raised in Little Rock alongside his brothers Gordon, John and Murry, by their father David Newbern who was a radiologist, and their mother Betty who was a Spanish teacher.
He was attending a local high school when invited by his teacher to appear in his first school play. George then focused on acting, appearing in nearly all the plays performed at the school. In the same year when he matriculated in 1982, he got to launch his acting career with his portrayal of Private Lawrence ‘Coward’ Jones in the historical war drama mini-series “The Blue and the Gray”.
George then decided to rather focus on his education, and enrolled at Northwestern University at which he was a member of the fraternity Kappa Alpha Theta, and from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1986. As he wanted to focus on studying, George didn’t act in any movies or TV series during those four years at college.
Roles in movies
George has now appeared in more than 130 movies and TV series, and we are about to mention some of his most notable performances in this article.
He made his debut film appearance in the 1986 drama “My Little Girl”, but which failed to attract much attention. A couple of his following roles were in the 1987 adventure crime comedy “Adventures in Babysitting”, the 1988 comedy “Paramedics”, and the 1991 romantic family comedy “Father of the Bride”. His first notable performance was in the 1999 drama “The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn” written by Sterling Anderson, directed by Gregg Champion, and which starred Sidney Poitier, Dianne Wiest and Mary-Louise Parker. It follows a carpenter who is 91 years old, and fighting developers who are trying to make him sell his land. The film won one award and was nominated for four others, including a Primetime Emmy.
The year 2000 saw George appear in the hit romantic drama “If These Walls Could Talk 2”, written and directed by Jane Anderson, and which starred Vanessa Redgrave, Marian Seldes and Paul Giamatti. It follows the lives of three lesbian couples set in three different decades, and the movie won seven awards including a Golden Globe, while it was nominated for ten other awards.
In 2005, George voiced Sephiroth in the English version of the 2005 hit animated action adventure “Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children”, and in 2008, he played a supporting character in the drama “Fireflies in the Garden”, which starred Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe and Emily Watson – it was nominated for one award.
Some of the most popular movies in which George had roles in the following years were the 2009 mystery horror thriller “Saw VI”, the 2011 family drama “The Heart of Christmas”, and the 2015 animated action adventure “Justice League: Throne of Atlantis” (voice role).

Roles in TV series
In the late ‘80s and the early ‘90s, George appeared in one or two episodes of various series, including the adventure family drama “The Magical World of Disney” and the comedy “Bob”, gaining recognition in 1994 when cast to portray Mike Hansen, one of the lead characters in the comedy “The Boys Are Back”, which also starred Hal Linken and Suzanne Pleshette, and follows a middle-aged couple whose two sons move back with them, while one even brings his wife and children with him.
The year 1997 saw George portray the supporting character Dr. Scott Frank in the mystery thriller drama “Chicago Hope”, which was a hit, winning 24 awards including a Golden Globe, while it was nominated for 108 other awards. In 2000, he starred as Robert ‘Ditto’ Roberts III in the drama “Bull”, and some of George’s following notable performances were in the romantic drama “Providence”, the animated action adventure “Justice League” in which he voiced Superman Clark Kent and Thanagarian Soldier, and the mystery drama “Reunion”.
The year 2010 saw him portray the supporting character Dr. Curtis Ryerson in the drama “Nip/Tuck” created by Ryan Murphy, and which starred Dylan Walsh, Julian McMahon and Joely Richardson.
It follows the lives of two plastic surgeons, and the film won 12 awards including a Golden Globe while it was nominated for 58 other awards.
In 2015, George was cast to appear as Scottie Andrews in eight episodes of the drama “Granite Flats”, and two of his most recent roles in TV series have been in the 2019 mystery crime drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, and the 2020 crime drama “Dirty John”.
Other credits
George sang two songs in the 2012 movie “Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups”; the song “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” in the 2015 series “Granite Flats”; and two songs in the 2018 film “Pup Star: World Tour”. He also sang “Worst Christmas Ever” in the 2018 movie “Puppy Star Christmas”.

George has voiced characters in 13 video games, making his debut in 2003 by lending his voice to Meyvn Nooj in “Final Fantasy X-2”. The following video games in which he voiced characters were the 2005 “Kingdom Hearts II”, the 2006 “Bleach: Shattered Blade” and the 2007 “Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII”. Some of the other games in which he can be heard include the 2008 “Dissidia: Final Fantasy”, the 2015 “Code Name: S. T. E. A. M.” and most recently, the 2018 “Dissidia Final Fantasy NT”.
George has made a guest appearance in many talk-shows, such as “Stars in the House”, “The Love of Acting”, and “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum”.
Awards and nominations
George has been nominated for three Behind the Voice Actors Awards winning one: a 2013 Special/DVD Voice Acting Award for Best Male Vocal Performance in a TV Special/Direct-to-DVD Title or Short for “Superman vs. The Elite”.
The other two were joint award nominations for the 2013 Special/DVD Voice Acting Award for Best Vocal Ensemble in a TV Special/Direct-to-DVD Title or Short for “Superman vs. The Elite”, and a 2014 Video Game Voice Acting Award for Best Vocal Ensemble in a Video Game for “Injustice: Gods Among Us”, both shared with colleagues.
Love life and wife
George has been married to Marietta DePrima since 1990. They met sometime in the mid-1980s while they were still attending Northwestern University, and on 26 June 1995, the two welcomed their first daughter Emma, who was followed by her sister Mae on 19 September 1998, and on 15 November 2003, Marietta gave birth to her and George’s third child, son Ben. The family of five seems to be leading a happy life together as of March 2021.
Marietta is a popular actress and musician, who has been credited with appearing in around 20 movies and TV series – some of her most notable performances have been in the 1991 action adventure series “Quantum Leap”, the 1998 comedy series “The Hughleys”, and the 2017 comedy movie “Lady Bird”.
Neither George nor Marietta have spoken about any other people they have perhaps been with.
Hobbies and other interests
George is a huge lover of nature who prefers to spend his spare time up in the mountains, close to a lake or deep into the woods, rather than to stay in overcrowded cities.
