Who is Charlie Shotwell?

Charlie Shotwell was born in Madison, Wisconsin USA, on 17 July 2007 – his zodiac sign is Cancer and he holds American nationality. He is an actor who might be known best for his portrayal of the young Nai Cash in the 2016 comedy drama film “Captain Fantastic”, written and directed by Matt Ross, and which starred Viggo Mortensen, George MacKay and Samantha Isler. It follows a father who has been raising his six children in the Pacific Northwest woods, and who now has to return to society. The movie won 15 awards and was nominated for 50 others, including an Oscar.

Early life and education

Charlie is being raised in Madison alongside his three brothers and a half-sister, but nothing about his parents is known as they prefer to stay away from the media’s attention.

Charlie launched his acting career in 2014 aged seven, when he portrayed Daniel in the episode “The Domestics” of the comedy “The United Colors of Amani”, and the following year saw him portray The Son in three episodes of the comedy “The Comedians”, which starred Billy Crystal and Josh Gad, and follows one veteran and one new comedian doing a comedy sketch show; the series was nominated for two Primetime Emmys.

Also in 2015, Charlie made his debut film appearance when he portrayed Johnathan Drummer in the thriller drama “Man Down”.

Charlie is currently attending a local elementary school, at which he is interested in several things other than acting: he is playing soccer, and is learning to play the guitar.

Roles in movies

In 2016, Charlie portrayed Viking Boy in the comedy “Still Single”, but which failed to attract a lot of attention, and the same year saw him play Stinger Roper in the drama “Dr. Del” which received mixed reviews.

In 2017, he was cast to play Young Brian in the biographical drama “The Glass Castle”, written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and which starred Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts.

The movie follows the life of a girl growing up in a dysfunctional family, with an alcoholic father and an artistic mother; it was nominated for three awards, winning one. The same year saw Charlie portray Benjamin in the romantic drama “My Days of Mercy”, which starred Elliot Page and Kate Mara, and he went on to portray John Paul Getty II in the biographical crime drama “All the Money in the World”, which was nominated for 15 awards including one Oscar.

In 2018, he starred as Eddie in the adventure thriller drama “The Nightingale” written and directed by Jennifer Kent, and which also starred Aisling Franciosi, Baykali Ganambarr and Damon Herriman. It is set in 1825, and follows Clare chasing a British officer to avenge her family.

The movie was a hit, as it won 25 awards and was nominated for 34 others. The following year Charlie played Joseph in the family comedy “Troop Zero”.

Three of his most recent roles in movies have been in the 2019 mystery horror drama “Eli”, the 2020 romantic drama “The Nest”, and the 2021 thriller drama “John and the Hole”. Charlie has recently been cast to appear in two upcoming movies: the action adventure drama “Morbius” which will star Jared Leto, and the horror “The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre”.

Roles in TV series

As Charlie’s mostly been focused on appearing in movies, he has had roles in only three TV series. In 2017, he portrayed Sam Clark in the episode “Lily’s Law” of the crime drama “Chicago Justice”.

Charlie was nominated for three awards in 2017 for “Captain Fantastic”. He was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Feature Film – Supporting Young Actor, a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, and a CinEuphoria Award for Best Ensemble – International Competition.

Friends and relationships

Charlie is quite secretive when it comes to his love life, and hasn’t talked about any girls he might have dated, although it’s widely assumed that he’s most likely too young to be dating. There are still rumors circulating the internet that he is currently in a relationship with his first girlfriend, a mysterious girl, and that they’ve been together for a couple of months.

Charlie is said to be a highly sociable person, who gets along easily with people. He’s described as a down to earth person, and apparently has many friends at his elementary school, some of whom can be seen featured in a couple of his Instagram pictures.

Hobbies and other interests

Charlie is interested in music, and has been playing the piano and the guitar for a couple of years now. He’s hoping to eventually launch a career as a musician as well.

He is a lover of animals, and one of his favorites are chickens – Charlie appears to have a pet chicken which he calls Cornpop.

He is quite sporting and enjoys riding his skateboard and bicycle, while he occasionally plays soccer and tennis with his friends.Charlie is also keen on travelling, and although still very young, his acting career has made it possible for him to visit several US states.

He has his own favorite actors and actresses, some of whom are the late Heath Ledger, Jim Carrey and Julia Roberts, and a couple of his favorite movies are “Brokeback Mountain”, “The Dark Knight” and “Ace Venture: Pet Detective – When Nature Calls”.
