Fred Lee Scruggs Jr. was born on 18 April 1971, in New York City, USA. There’s no information about his parents in the media, while it’s known that his brother is David Scruggs, also known as Who$ane.

Until 13 years of age he lived in Flatbush, Brooklyn, before moving to South Jamaica, Queens. He went to John Adams High School, from which he matriculated in 1988.

During high school, he met his future rap group members, Big DS and Suave, however, the group wouldn’t be formed until they matriculated from high school. He didn’t take up the microphone until 1986, when he freestyled on a basketball court in Baisley Park in Queens.

Career Beginnings

Upon matriculating, Fredro, Big DS and Suave united to form the rap group Onyx, and the following year appointed Jeffrey Harris as their manager. Through him, they signed a contract with Profile Records label, and in 1990, released their first single, “Ah, And We Do It Like This”, but which failed to achieve commercial success.

Nevertheless, Fredro and Big DS met Jam Master Jay at the Jones Beach GreekFest Festival, who gave them a chance and, after hearing their demo, signed them to his JMJ Records, meantime, they added rapper Sticky Fingaz to the group.

Onyx’s first single for JMJ Records, entitled “Throw Ya Gunz,” came out in 1992 and topped the Rap Tracks chart. The following year, Onyx released their debut full-length album “Bacdafucup”, which landed at No. 17 on the Billboard 200 chart. Ultimately, achieving platinum status in the US and gold in Canada, mostly thanks to the eponymous hit single “Slam”, but in addition spawning hits such as “Shifftee”, among others.

The group released two more albums through JMJ Records. In 1995 “All We Got Iz Us” came out, which landed at No. 22 on Billboard 200 chart, while it spawned such hits as “Live Niguz” and “Last Dayz”, among others. Three years later, “Shut ‘Em Down” came out, and became their best charting album at No.10 on Billboard 200 chart.

Since then, the group has released several albums, but without success. Their most recent and 12th album in total, “World Take Over”, came out on 9 September 2022.

Solo Career

Fredro has also enjoyed a successful solo career. He signed a contract with Koch Records, and his first mixtape, “Firestarr” came out in 2000 – the following February it was released as his full-length debut album. Since then, he has released three studio albums, “Don’t Get Mad Get Money” (2003), “Made In the Streets” (2013), and “Firestarr 2” (2018).

Acting Career Beginnings

Fredro’s manager, Jeff Harris, encouraged him to try himself as an actor, and he made his on-screen debut in 1993, with the role of Bamboo in the television movie “Stapped”.

Three years later, he secured his first major role as Quinton ‘Q’ Brooks in the award-winning TV comedy series “Moesha”, appearing in 50 episodes of the popular series from 1996 to 2000, which made him quite popular as an actor.

In 2001, despite being 30 years old, he played teenager Malakai in the award-winning romantic musical-drama film “Save the Last Dance”, about a young girl who moves to Chicago and starts dating an African-American teenager from the South Side who already has a criminal past – it starred Julia Stiles, Sean Patrick Thomas and Kerry Washington.

Three years later, Fredro appeared in the action crime-comedy film “Torque”, with Ice Cube in the lead role, alongside Martin Henderson and Monet Mazur. In 2006 he portrayed Pharaoh in the drama film “My Brother”, written and directed by Anthony Lover and starring Vanessa Williams, Tatum O’Neal and Nashawn Kearse.

The following year, he starred in the comedy film “All Lies on Me”, while in 2009, he appeared in the action crime-drama film “A Day in the Life”, written and directed by Sticky Fingaz, and starring Alvin ‘Porky’ Holland, Bokeem Woodbine and Chris Fleming.

After a short break from acting, Fredro returned to the big screen in 2015, with the titular role in the action film “Diamond Ruff”. In 2017 he was Wali in the action thriller film “The Fearless One”, and most recently, he starred in the drama film “Asbury Park”, and appeared in the TV comedy series “Bust Down”, created by and starring Sam Jay, Langston Kerman and Jak Knight.

Moreover, in 2023, Fredro is working on several projects, including the film “3 Days Rising”, which is now in post-production, and “One Mic”, which is in production, but both projects are yet to receive their premiere dates.

Feuds with Rappers

Fredro is known for his long-running beef with 50 Cent. The two entered an altercation in 2003 at the Vibe Magazine Awards rehearsals, since when Fredro has made several comments on 50 Cent, saying that he’d been disrespectful towards the Onyx rap group and to Jam Master Jay as well.

Fredro has also beefed with New York City rapper DMX.
