Who is Ruth Wilson?
British actress and producer Ruth Wilson, MBE – Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – was born in Ashford, Kent England, on 13 January 1982, making her zodiac sign Capricorn. She’s been credited with appearing in 33 movies and TV series, and is perhaps best known for playing Alice Morgan in 14 episodes of the mystery crime series “Luther”, created by Neil Cross, and which starred Idris Elba, Dermot Crowley and Michael Smiley. It follows genius murder detective John Luther, the series aired its 21 episodes from 2010 through 2019, and won 16 of its 96 award nominations.
Education and early life
Ruth and her brothers Matthew, Samuel ‘Sam’ and Tobias ‘Toby’ Wilson, were raised in Shepperton, Surrey by their mother Mary Metson who was a probation officer, and father Nigel Wilson who was an investment banker; Samuel’s today a BBC journalist. Ruth’s grandfather Alexander Wilson was an MI6 officer and novelist.
She studied at the independent Catholic Notre Dame School prior to progressing to Esher College; she launched her modeling career during her teenage years. Ruth matriculated in 1999 and then continued her education at the University of Nottingham, while she simultaneously studied acting at the Nottingham New Theatre.
She received her Bachelor’s degree in history in 2002, and then graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art with a Master’s degree in 2005; Ruth went on to co-found Hush Productions.
Roles in TV series
Ruth’s debut TV series role was playing the main character Jane in four episodes of the 2006 romantic mini-series Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre”; it also starred Toby Stephens and Lorraine Ashbourne, follows a governess who’s fallen for her master, and the series won seven of its 30 award nominations.
In 2007, Ruth portrayed Georgina Barrow in the episode “Miss Marple: Nemesis” of the crime mystery “Agatha Christie’s Marple”, and in 2006 and 2007, she starred as Jewel Diamond in the crime comedy “Suburban Shootout”, which follows the citizens of Little Stempington who’ve begun killing each other; the series won one of its 11 award nominations. The remainder of the 2000s saw Ruth appear in an episode or two of the comedy “Freezing”, the science fiction thriller mini-series “The Prisoner”, and the drama mini-series “Small Island”.
From 2014 through 2019, Ruth starred as Alison Bailey in the popular drama “The Affair”, which Sarah Treem and Hagai Levi created, and which also starred Maura Tierney and Dominic West. It follows a married novelist who’s fallen in love with a young waitress, and the series won six of its 31 award nominations.
Ruth’s most recent TV series role has been playing Mrs Coulter in 21 episodes of the family adventure “His Dark Materials” since 2019.
Roles in movies
Ruth’s debut film role was playing Woman in the 2007 short drama “Get Off My Land”, and the same year saw her appear in the dramas “A Real Summer” and “Capturing Mary”.
She began attracting attention by playing Princess Betsy Tverskoy in the popular 2012 romantic drama, Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”, directed by Joe Wright, and which starred Keira Knightley, Jude Law and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It follows Anna Karenina and Count Alexei Vronsky’s affair, and the movie won 34 of its 87 award nominations, including an Oscar win for Best Achievement in Costume Design.
The following year saw Ruth portray Rebecca Reid in another hit movie – the action adventure western “The Lone Ranger”. It was directed by Gore Verbinski, starred Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer and William Fichtner, and follows the life of Native American warrior Tonto; the film won five of its 27 award nominations, including two Oscar nominations for Best Achievement in Make-up and Hairstyling and Best Achievement in Visual Effects.
Ruth could then have been seen appearing in several commercially successful movies, such as the 2013 biographical comedy “Saving Mr. Banks”, the 2016 horror mystery “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House”, and the 2018 mystery horror “The Little Stranger”.
Her most recent film role has been playing Petula Spencer in the 2022 crime mystery comedy “See How They Run”, directed by Tom George, and which starred Kieran Hodgson, Pearl Chanda and Gregory Cox. Set in ‘50s London, the film follows the murder of a member of a film crew, and was nominated for a London Critics Circle Film Award for British/Irish Actor of the Year (Harris Dickinson).
Ruth produced the 2018 biographical mystery mini-series “Mrs Wilson”, and the 2021 drama movie “True Things”; she’s currently working on the upcoming movie “The Woman in the Wall”.

Ruth’s had 23 award nominations, and won four – a 2015 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama, for “The Affair”; a 2015 Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Award for Outstanding Performance, for “The Other”; a 2020 BAFTA Award, Wales for Best Actress, for “His Dark Materials”; and a Best Actress Award for “True Things” at the 2021 Stockholm Film Festival.
During the 2021 Birthday Honours, Ruth was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to drama.
Love life and boyfriends
Ruth avoids talking about her love life in public, but it’s still widely known that she’s dated two famous actors. From 2012 through 2014, she was in a relationship with British actor Jude Law; he’s had roles in close to 100 movies and TV series, while some of his best performances have been in the 1999 crime thriller movie “The Talented Mr. Ripley”, the 2004 romantic film “Closer”, and the 2014 adventure crime comedy movie “The Grand Budapest Hotel”.
In 2015, Ruth dated American actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who’s appeared in over 60 movies and TV series, and was nominated for a 2006 Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, for “Brokeback Mountain”.
Ruth seems to be unattached as of January 2023, hasn’t married, and doesn’t have children.

Ruth starred in several plays set up by her production company, including “Romeo and Juliet” and “Macbeth”.
