Early life, parents and education
Marcel spent his childhood in Puerto Rico, where he was raised by his father Carlitos Ruiz Ruiz, a famous Puerto Rican actor, film writer and director, and his mother Mariem Perez Riera, a famous Puerto Rican producer, director and editor. Marcel’s grandfather Silverio Perez is a famous Puerto Rican comedian and TV host.
Thanks to his parents who often took him onto the sets of their movies and TV series, he became interested in acting at a very early age. Marcel mostly practiced his skills at a local theatre, and he also appeared in various plays performed at both his elementary and later high school. He was into sports as well, and played soccer for his high school’s team.
Marcel has matriculated just recently in 2021; it appears that he won’t be pursuing a college degree, but will focus on his acting career.
Career as an actor
Marcel has only three acting credits, including his role in “One Day at a Time”. In 2017, he portrayed Popeye in the episode “Trauma” of the crime drama “Snowfall”. It was created by Eric Amadio, Dave Andron and John Singleton, has been airing since 2017, and stars Damson Idris, Carter Hudson and Isaiah John. The series follows the crack cocaine epidemic which occurred in Los Angeles in the ‘80s, and has won three of the seven awards for which it has been nominated.
Marcel’s only other role has been his portrayal of John Smith, in the 2019 biographical drama movie “Breakthrough”.
It was written by Grant Nieporte, directed by Roxann Dawson, and starred Marcel Ruiz, Topher Grace and Sarah Constible. The film follows a mother who, after her son nearly drowns in a lake, prays to God every day to protect his life; it won two of the 13 awards for which it was nominated, including an Oscar nomination.
